3.2 The Main Study

The main study was conducted in Fuchun, Bowen and Christ Church Secondary Schools – all in the north of Singapore.  The schools were selected primarily because their geographic proximity would have meant that the socio-economic and academic profiles of their respective student intakes were similar – not only to each other, but also to the pilot school.  A total of 106 students (fifty-two females and fifty-four males) were involved.  The study was conducted between March and July 2004 (Figure 2), at seven different neighbourhoods in Singapore, namely Holland Village, Little India, Singapore Expo, Sembawang Hills, Little Guilin, Jurong East and Pasir Panjang.
