Chapter Four - Results and Discussion of Main StudyThe main study was conducted in Fuchun, Bowen and Christ Church Secondary Schools. The schools were selected primarily because the socio-economic and academic profiles of their respective student intakes were similar – not only to each other, but also to the pilot school. A total of 106 students (fifty-two females and fifty-four males) were involved. The study was conducted between March and July 2004, at seven different neighbourhoods in Singapore, namely Holland Village, Little India, Singapore Expo, Sembawang Hills, Little Guilin, Jurong East and Pasir Panjang. This chapter presents the results of the main study, beginning with the data obtained from the pre- and post-tests (Tables 8 to 14), and then that obtained from the orienteering task (Tables 15 to 23). The pre- and post-test data represent the performance of the participants in the two parts of the test as described in Chapter Three, namely the matching of three-dimensionally rendered objects and the panorama-to-map exercise. As for the orienteering task, Tables 15 to 21 present data on participants’ performance in the pre- and post-tests as related to their performance in the task, Tables 22 and 23 present data pertaining to the text- and picture-messages sent during the task, and finally Tables 24 and 25 present the various discourse modes used by participants during the task. <- 3 Detailed Description of Research Methodology and Implementation of Intervention -> 4.1 Pre- and Post-tests |
