5.1 Case One - Team 'Little Guilin' (A) 5.1.1 Introduction This team of seven students conducted their explorations in the Little Guilin neighbourhood. As described in Chapter Three, Little Guilin is a disused granite quarry which has since been filled with rainwater. It is named after the scenic karst limestone region of Guilin in China. Little Guilin is in the New Town of Bukit Batok, and is surrounded by both private and public high-rise flats. Four of the seven students – Maureen, Kai Wen, Yojit and Senthil – went to Little Guilin on the 11th of February 2004 for the orienteering task, while the remaining three – Bing Qiang, Kwok Yaw and Alex – went there for orienteering the next day. On the 3rd of March, the entire team of seven went to Little Guilin again, for the perspectives task. When Maureen, Kai Wen, Yojit and Senthil went to Little Guilin for the orienteering task, Maureen and Kai Wen formed the leading pair, while Yojit and Senthil constituted the following pair. Together, they completed the task of deducing the 1.6 km route in 73 minutes, Maureen and Kai Wen sending a text-message every 6.6 minutes and a picture-message every 5.6 minutes (that is, sending some sort of message every 3.0 minutes), and Yojit and Senthil sending a text-message every 4.9 minutes and a picture-message every 14.7 minutes (that is, sending some sort of message every 3.7 minutes). <- 5 Comparison of Two Specific Cases at the Same Field Site -> 5.1.2 Orienteering task |
